spin

5 weeks | fall semester 2025

investigate and redefine the user experience of the morning routine by transforming jewelry storage into an intelligent, interactive system. using a programmed carousel to solve decision fatigue, explore how automated randomization can create a unique daily selection, while allowing the user to change pieces at any time.

project brief

choosing what jewelry to wear in the morning ends up being a big time spend. so, coming up with something to bridge the gap saves time and solves the situation.

saving time deciding what to wear

to outline how the user would interact with the proposed solution, a diagram was made to do so.

analyzing human-machine interaction

knowing that there internally would be a spinning carousel, the form naturally lended itself to becoming more round. by utilizing diffused lights, it complements the form.

form and lighting inspiration

initial thumbnail sketches

attempting to get a breadth of ideas down, the first phase was very quick and required immediate refinement.

concept visualization

few of the concepts were chosen to refine, and eventually one was selected, with all of them still hooking on to the main concept of housing that one internal carousel.

refined concept visualization

after selecting the final direction, supporting sketches were made to complete the process.

using foam core to create a full-scale model, it showed how the scale really would look and feel before final fabrication. however, this ended up being a learning moment as the decided scale was much too large.

foam core modeling

after the backbones for the final design were defined, small tweaks were made to curate the final design.

cad iterations

small, but mighty, this jewelry randomizer helps save time in the morning, and makes it fun to decide what is going to be worn every day.

high-fidelity prototype

after waving your hand in front of the ultrasonic sensor, a stepper motor is triggered, spinning at a random interval, landing on one of four spots on the carousel, and then giving you your jewelry selection. while the motor spins, the diffused leds stay red, and then promptly fade into yellow to signify that the jewelry is ready to be removed.
